Tips for driving test nerves

Everybody gets nervous before their driving test. The problem is, the more nervous you get, the more likely you are to make mistakes.

So here’s a few tips to help you get over those driving test nerves.

Practice, practice, practice

Get some practice driving in with a parent, a guardian, or any more experienced driver. Work on those manoeuvres that trouble you most, whether that’s reverse bay parking or turning in the road. Practice makes perfect, and the more manoeuvres you’re able to master, the more confident you’ll feel going into your test.

It’s good to talk

Your driving instructor wants you to pass your test. It’s their job! They’re fully invested in your success. So if you feel particularly nervous before your test, talk to your instructor. Let them know what’s worrying you, and they’ll be more than happy to help.

And remember, many people have been a learner driver at some point in their lives. So talk to your parents, your siblings, your friends, and anyone who’s been through what you’re going through. They might be able to offer you some advice.

…and breathe

Breathe deeply through your nose. Feel your lower lungs fill, then our upper lungs. Hold your breath for three seconds, before slowly exhaling through your pursed lips. As you do so, feel the muscles in your face, jaw, shoulders and stomach relax. It’s a simple breathing exercise, but it’s been proven to help fight stress and anxiety.

Pretend you’re still on a driving lesson

What if you’re driving test wasn’t a driving test? What if it was just another lesson? Try pretending that your driving test is a standard driving lesson, but with a different instructor. Concentrate on doing everything right, just like you do every time you drive. Tell yourself that there’s nothing really to worry about, and feel your nerves melt away.

Think of how amazing it’s going to be when you’re able to drive

When you pass your driving test, you’re going to feel utterly amazing. You’ll have total freedom, with the ability to drive wherever you want, whenever you want. Think of the road trips with friends, the holidays, the days out! Think of how much easier everything will be! Fight the driving test nerves through focusing on the positives over the negatives.

And if you do fail your driving test, so what? You can always take it again.
